We asked our Instagram followers to share any questions they have about the custom apparel industry. In this episode of Apparel Academy, Ricoma CEO Henry Ma answered a few of our followers’ questions to help give you insight into your own custom apparel journey. Question #1: What are your thoughts on other businesses around me that don’t charge digitizing fees for logos? Whether you choose to charge digitizing fees largely depends on your volume of orders and how your business is set up. If properly leveraged, waiving a setup fee for services like digitizing and printing can be used to incentivize your customers to place large bulk orders. After all, it’s easy to wave the $30-$50 you might charge to digitize a design as part of a discount or special promotion. It’s important to note, however, that you need to be careful about waiving setup fees across the board. Waiving the setup fee on smaller orders might not be worth the time and effort. You need to always be mindful of the time you dedicate to an order to ensure you’re properly compensated. Question #2: Can you give us a quick comparison of the different 15 needle machines you sell? We have three different models of commercial, 15 needle single-head embroidery machines: The TC-1501, the MT-1501 and the SWD-1501. The TC-1501 is the smallest and most lightweight of our 15 needle machines. Despite its compact size, the TC-1501 still offers a sizeable embroidery area of 22 x 14 in. This means that you’ll still be able to easily create a lot of large designs. The MT-1501 has the same embroidery area as the TC-1501. However, the MT-1501 offers a much larger clearance area underneath the head of the machine – making it much more conducive for embroidering bulkier items like jackets and bags. Lastly, the SWD-1501 is the largest 15-needle single-head embroidery machine on the market. With an embroidery area of up to 32 inches wide and 20 inches deep, this machine can handle any embroidery design you throw at it. In addition to allowing for larger designs, the SWD-1501’s large embroidery area makes it an ideal choice for production runs of patches. Question #3: What’s the process for trading in my embroidery machine when I begin to scale up my business? When you’re ready to trade in, simply contact our team and send us some photos of your embroidery machine and its serial number. We’ll then be able to determine the trade-in value based on how well you’ve maintained it. You can then apply that trade-in value towards whatever machine you’re interested in upgrading to. One thing that is important to note, however, is that it might not be in your best interest to simply upgrade from a single-head machine to a multi-head machine. While a multi-head machine will certainly increase your production capability, it would be inefficient when completing smaller or more personalized orders because you would have to turn off several of your heads to complete the project.
