To avoid these costly mistakes, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind: Tip 1: Understand the time you have on your hands to dedicate to embroidery before you decide which machine to purchase. If you want to test the waters and only plan to run a business on the side, it might be best for you to start with a smaller machine. However, if you plan to run a full-time business, you should consider purchasing a machine that you can grow into rather than one that will only meet your needs at the moment. Tip 2: Think about your client base. If you’re just starting out and still in the process of building a reliable customer base, you don’t want to purchase a six-head embroidery machine right off the bat. On the other hand, if you already have an existing client base or run a decorating business and want to expand into embroidery, it will be in your best interest to purchase a multi-head machine since you may already have a large volume of orders to fulfill. Tip 3: Think about the type of items you want to embroider or the items you expect your clients will want. For example, if you are working for the restaurant industry, make sure the machine you purchase can embroider on aprons, chef’s hats and other specialty goods. You should also make sure the machine you want has the capabilities to embroider items you are thinking of producing in the future, so you don’t outgrow it too quickly. Next, here are two reasons why you should upgrade your machine: Reason 1: You can no longer keep up with the volume of orders you have coming in. Even though this is the most common reason people have for upgrading their machine, the solution isn’t as simple as you might think. If you are a business with a large volume, upgrading to a multi-head machine is usually the best solution, but if you mainly focus on custom or one-off orders, you may need to consider purchasing multiple single-heads for greater flexibility. Most large-scale businesses opt for a combination and have both multi-head and single-head machines available to handle all types of orders. Reason 2: Your current machine is preventing you from fulfilling orders. This can be anything from your embroidery area being too small to not having the number of needles you need to efficiently complete large multi-color designs. In this case, you would upgrade based on the specific features you are lacking in order to fulfill the needs of your customers so you can avoid having to turn away orders. And there you have it. A complete list of what to keep in mind when buying or upgrading your embroidery machine.
